COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT RESIDENT GUIDE

                     FENCING
In all agricultural and residential zones, rear and side yard fences may not exceed six (6) feet in height. Fencing in the front yard extending from the front building line of the house to the sidewalk may not exceed four (4) feet in height if non-visually obscuring or three (3) feet in height if solid. Wood or chain link fencing are not allowed in front yards. Front yard fences parallel to the street are only allowed along collector streets. These fences are to be wrought iron only. Collector street fencing is required for rear and side yards adjacent to collector streets. A complete list of collector streets and allowed fencing designs can be obtained from the Community Development Department. All fences require a fencing permit prior to construction.

VEHICLE STORAGE     
Dismantled or inoperative vehicles cannot be stored on property within the City except that up to two (2) such vehicles may be stored within an enclosed building or an area completely screened with an opaque fence from street view or from neighboring properties. Commercial vehicles may not be parked or stored in a residential or agricultural zone.

ALL NIGHT WINTER PARKING REGULATIONS:

No person shall park a vehicle on any street within the jurisdiction of the city during the period from November 1 through March 1 between the hours of one o'clock (1:00) A.M. and six o'clock (6:00) A.M. for more than three (3) minutes when loading or unloading passengers and for a period of time longer than thirty (30) minutes when loading, unloading or delivering property or supplies, except physicians during emergency calls, emergency vehicles or law enforcement vehicles exempted under section 10.04.070 of this title, or other authorized vehicles in accordance with section 10.20.020 of this chapter.                      HOME BUSINESS
Any Business that is operated in a residence is required to have a home occupation/business license from South Jordan City. Individual properties must be in compliance with all zoning ordinance requirements before a license can be issued

RECREATIONAL VEHICLE AND TRAILER STORAGE

All recreational vehicles, including campers, trailers, boats, jet skis etc., must be stored in a rear or side yard behind the front building line of the house. No travel trailer, motor home or other recreational vehicle may be used as living quarters.

ACCESSORY BUILDINGS     
All accessory buildings 200 sq. ft. in area or smaller require a zoning permit. All other accessory buildings require a building permit. Required set backs can be obtained from Community Development Department.

LANDSCAPING AND WEED CONTROL
It is the responsibility of the homeowner adjacent to a park strip to maintain the park strip, including watering, weeding, and mowing. Homeowners adjacent to sidewalks must keep the sidewalk clear of all obstructions. NO DUMPING of landscaping material (i.e., Soil, bark, etc.) is permitted on streets. The front and street side yards of single family lots shall be landscaped and properly maintained with lawn or other acceptable plants material unless otherwise approved by the City Council with conditional use permit. No person owning property within South Jordan shall permit weeds on his/her property to exceed a height of six (6) inches (State, County, City Ordinance). Weeds and other noxious plants must be removed after cutting. Further the exteriors of buildings in residential zones shall be properly maintained by the owners.

TRASH STORAGE

There shall be no open storage of trash, debris, used material or commercial goods or wrecked or neglected materials, equipment or vehicles in the City.

No garbage can or refuse container can be left in the street for more than 24 hours after the collection day.

GRAFFITI CONTROL

In order to prevent the unsightly and degrading effects of vandalism and graffiti, it is the responsibility of property owners to remove any graffiti on his/her property.


SIGNAGE

No sign shall be erected, raised, installed, moved, placed, replaced, reconstructed, remodeled, extended, enlarged or altered unless a sign permit is first obtained from the Community Development Department. Garage sale signs are exempt conditional to the following provisions:

  • Maximum of 4 sq. ft. in size.
  • Only located on the property.
  • Not to exceed 7 consecutive days or a total of 21 days per calendar year.
