Municipal (City) Elections are held in odd numbered years. The elective officers of South Jordan City consist of a City Council made up of 5 Council Members representing Districts 1-5 and a Mayor, who are elected in a non-partisan election. The Mayor and The City Council are elected to four-year overlapping terms.

Citizens desiring to run for office must file a "Declaration of Candidacy" with the City Recorder. A candidate must have been a resident of South Jordan City for at least 12 months (365 days) immediately prior to the date of the election. If a candidate is running for a City Council District Seat, he or she, must be a resident of that district. All candidates must be a current registered voter in the state of Utah.
