Storm water: Liquid runoff from rain or snow storms.
NPDES: National Pollution Discharge Elimination System. "As authorized by the Clean Water Act, the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit program controls water pollution"
UPDES: Utah Pollution Discharge Elimination System. "Construction projects that disturb one acre or more must be covered under the general construction permit. Coverage under this permit must be obtained and erosion and sediment controls must be implemented according to a storm water pollution prevention prepared in compliance with the general permit. Construction projects which disturb less than 1 acre but are part of a larger common plan of development greater than one acre must obtain coverage under the permit (parcel owners.)"
SWPPP: Storm Water Pollution Permit Plan. A storm water pollution plan consists of using measures to control erosion on a project site.
NOI: Notice of Intent. "The Utah Administrative Code (UAC) R317-8-3.9 requires the operator(s) (owner, developer, contractor, etc.) of a construction site which will grade one acre or more per common plan (includes all phases of development) to obtain coverage under the Utah Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (UPDES) General Permit for Storm Water Discharges Associated with Construction Activity. This program allows the operator(s) to electronically submit a Notice of Intent to the Division of Water Quality and pay the permit fee to obtain the required permit coverage."
NOT: Notice of Termination. "Terminating Coverage.
1. Operators wishing to terminate coverage under the UPDES permit must submit a notice of termination (NOT) found in the addendum of this permit. 2. All permittees must submit a NOT within thirty (30) days after completion of their construction activities and final stabilization of their portion of the site, or another operator taking over all of their responsibilities at the site. A permittee cannot submit an NOT without final stabilization unless another party has agreed to
assume responsibility for final stabilization of the site. Appropriate enforcement actions may be taken for permit violations where a permittee submits a NOT but the permittee has not transferred operational control to another permittee or the site has not undergone final stabilization."
BMPs: Best Management Practices. This is the definition used by the EPA to define erosion control measures that are effectively used to prevent pollution from a project site from entering into the storm drain system.
Storm water Pollution: Curbs and gutter channel water runoff from our streets and land into pipes underground which eventually carry the water back into local bodies of water such as the Jordan River, irrigation ditches, and canals.
Storm Drain System: System of gutters and underground pipes that pick up surface runoff and distribute it back into the water system.
