UPDES (Utah Pollutant Discharge Elimination System)

  1. Federal Requirements (NPDES National Pollution Discharge Elimination System).
    1. http://cfpub.epa.gov/npdes/
    2. "Water pollution degrades surface waters making them unsafe for drinking, fishing, swimming, and other activities. As authorized by the Clean Water Act, the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit program controls water pollution by regulating point sources that discharge pollutants into waters of the United States. Point sources are discrete conveyances such as pipes or man-made ditches."..." In most cases, the NPDES permit program is administered by authorized states." From the EPA's website
  2. State Requirements.
    1. Utah under federal permission administers the NPDES program as the UPDES program on a local level. The requirements are the same as for the federal guidelines, but are overseen on a local level.
  3. How this affects South Jordan City.
    1. South Jordan City oversees all public storm water runoff, and is permitted under state and federal requirements to do so. As part of that requirement they are charged with the pollution quality of this runoff into local water bodies (i.e. the Jordan River, local canals).
  4. How to apply for a UPDES Permit.
    1. You can file electronically online at the Division of Water Quality's website. http://www.waterquality.utah.gov/UPDES/updes_f.htm or contact them below.
