Citizen Police Academy

The Citizen Police Academy is an informational class and a behind-the-scenes look at the South Jordan Police Department.

Meetings

The nine-week Citizen Police Academy course meets every Thursday for three hours (6:30 to 9:30 pm) at the South Jordan Police Department.

The class size is limited to 25 students. There is no fee to attend.

Topics covered in the Citizens Police Academy include:

  • Overview of the South Jordan Police Department organization and structure
  • Information on recruiting and training
  • Various divisions of the Police Department:
    • Patrol Operations
    • Traffic Operations
    • Peace Officer Liability
    • Detective Division
    • Crime Scene Investigations
    • Drugs and Gangs
    • School Crimes
    • Crime Victim Program
    • Court Operations
  • Hands-on workshops in areas such as:
    • Arrest Control/Defensive Tactics
    • Physical Training
    • S.W.A.T. and Firearms Safety
    • Crime Scene Investigations
    • Patrol Scenarios
  • Tour of the Valley Emergency Communications Center is included
  • Citizen Police Academy class members have the opportunity to observe police patrol work through a four-hour ride-along experience with a patrol officer

After completing the Citizen Police Academy, class members participate in a graduation ceremony and will receive a certificate of completion.

Requirements

  • Minimum enrollment age is 18
  • Applicants must not have a substantial or serious criminal history
  • Submit an application
  • Pass a basic background investigation
  • Live or work in South Jordan City
