INDOOR WATER SAVING TIPS

Large Sink

Take a few minutes to follow some simple water saving solutions for your home that will make a big difference. Save thousands of gallons each month and keep money in your pocket by following these quick tips.

  1. Verify that your home is leak free. Check all faucets, pipes, and toilets periodically for leaks. One way to check leaky toilets is to put a couple of drops of food coloring in the tank and wait an hour, if the colored water appears in the bowl you have a leak.
  2. Install water saving shower heads and aerators on faucets.
  3. Consider upgrading your current toilet to a High Efficiency Toilet.
  4. Consider upgrading your appliances with new water-efficient appliances that help save water.
  5. Avoid using toilets as wastebaskets or ashtrays.
  6. Turn off the water while shaving or brushing teeth.
  7. When washing your hands, do not let the water run while you are lathering your hands.
  8. Take shorter showers.
  9. Limit the use of the kitchen sink disposal; use a trash can to dispose food instead.
  10. Fully load your dishwasher. Dishwashers perform better when full and use the same amount of water no matter how big the load is.
  11. Turn off the water when washing dishes by hand. Fill one side of the sink to rinse dishes in.
  12. Avoid using running water over frozen food - defreeze food by putting it in the refrigerator ahead of time or in a pot with cool water.
  13. Scrape food off dishes to avoid rinsing them prior to putting them in the dishwasher.
  14. Select the proper water level for laundry and wash full loads.
  15. Keep a water pitcher or a water bottle in the refrigerator for drinking cold water instead of running the tap to cool it off.
