FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
South Jordan to Break Ground on First Gold Star Families Memorial Monument in Salt Lake County
SOUTH JORDAN, UT – May 11, 2022 – The City of South Jordan will break ground this weekend on the first ever Gold Star Families Memorial Monument to be built in Salt Lake County and the third in the State of Utah.
These monuments honor the families of active military members who have paid the ultimate sacrifice. That is a message that our Mayor and City Council wanted to bring to the Gold Star Families in South Jordan and the whole Salt Lake Valley.
“I was able to visit the monuments in St. George and North Ogden, and knew that we needed one here,” said South Jordan Mayor Dawn Ramsey. “We are excited to bring the first monument to Salt Lake Valley.”
Gold Star Families Memorial Monuments are a two-sided tribute made of black granite. One side bears the words: Gold Star Families Memorial Monument, a tribute to Gold Star Families and Relatives who sacrificed a Loved One for our Freedom. On the other side of the monument, there are scenes etched on each of the four panels: Homeland, Family, Patriot and Sacrifice. At the center of this tribute, is a silhouette of a saluting service member which represents the Legacy of the Loved Ones who have paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.
South Jordan is looking to raise $25,000 from community members and local businesses. Anything over that amount will go to offsetting the cost of manufacturing and installing the monument.
“The fundraising efforts, which we’re doing through the Woody Williams Foundation is a part of the effort to get community members involved in the process and to learn about Gold Star Families,” said Mayor Ramsey.
The monument is expected to be finished sometime this fall.
