Fire Won't Wait, Plan Your Escape

Fire Won't Wait, Plan your Escape Fire Prevention Week

The South Jordan Fire Department is teaming up with the National Fire Protection Association® (NFPA®)—the official sponsor of Fire Prevention Week for its 100-year anniversary of Fire Prevention in the United States.

This year’s campaign, which will be held October 9 – 15, is encouraging residents to have a home fire escape plan in the event of a fire or other emergency. According to the NFPA, our homes are typically where we feel the safest from the risk of fire. However, nearly 75% of all U.S. fire deaths occur in homes.

Due to modern building construction and furnishings, today’s homes burn faster and hotter than they used to. This is why it is critical that our community recognizes potential fire danger and takes steps to protect themselves and their families. Having working smoke detectors along with a fire escape plan provides guidance for families to get out safely in the event of a fire.

The South Jordan Fire Department wants to share some safety tips for this year’s safety message of “Fire Won’t Wait, Plan Your Escape”.

Make sure your home escape plan meets the need of all of your family members, including those with sensory or physical disabilities.

  • Smoke alarms should be installed inside every sleeping room, outside of each sleeping area, and on every level of your home. Smoke detectors should be interconnected so when one sounds, they all sound.
  • Know at least two ways out of every room, if possible. Make sure all doors and windows open easily.
  • Have an outside meeting place located a safe distance from your home where everyone in your family knows to meet.
  • Practice your home fire drill at least twice a year with everyone in your household.
