[ARCHIVED] Are You Part of the S.A.F.E. Neighborhoods Program?

What is the S.A.F.E. neighborhoods program?

S.A.F.E. stands for Schools Aid Families in Emergencies. This program offers free local training sessions, which teach individuals how to prepare themselves and their families on where to go after an earthquake. Participants can also learn what to do to help their neighborhood be part of the solution in a natural disaster where vital resources are no longer operational.

Did you know that the National Earthquake Information Center detects roughly 50 earthquakes each day?

Many of those are small and never felt. Some earthquakes with magnitudes reaching 7.0 and above could make electricity, clean water, gas, and plumbing unavailable.

Can’t I just stay home and wait till help arrives?

The S.A.F.E. Neighborhoods program partners with elementary schools in South Jordan to ensure that each school is equipped with tools and resources that community members can effectively operate as a reunification hub, which also provides safe shelter and lifesaving support for their neighborhoods until outside help arrives.

How can I prepare?

It can take at least 96 hours for outside resources to begin arriving. You can start by creating a 96-hour kit at home using a backpack filled with necessity items such as clean water, first aid kit, food, etc. for quick and easy access to take on the go. You can also attend live trainings to learn how to create your own action plans and view or print your neighborhood map with directions to your nearest S.A.F.E. Neighborhoods school. A complete training schedule and kit preparation list can be found at S.A.F.E. Utah.

We also recommend you sign up for our South Jordan City Emergency Notification System by visiting VECC’s sign up page.
