Tax Education 101 - Parks

Yorkshire Park

South Jordan’s parks and trails are beautiful. South Jordan has 35 city parks, more than 9 miles of trails, 3 fishing ponds, 68 acres of natural open space and boasts a variety of recreational fields and courts throughout the city.

Providing a variety of parks and open space is among one of the City’s top strategic initiatives. Having a strong offering of parks, boosts the local economy by drawing visitors from other places for league play, assists in the city’s goal to minimize negative effects on the environment and supports the habitation of wildlife throughout the community.

Why do we have parks and how are these amenities funded?

The City engages the community to align its resources. Through surveys and public meetings, the City listens to residents and seeks solutions that will meet the needs of the community as a whole. The City follows eight strategic priorities that shape the overall direction of the City's budget. Ultimately, these priorities and values guide how your tax dollars are spent.

The maintenance of our parks, trails and open space are funded through the general fund. As a reminder, general fund dollars are comprised of property, sales, and franchise taxes.

Construction of new parks and their amenities are generally funded by park impact fees, which are collected at the time of new residential development.

What do we get for our tax dollars?

Some of the benefits of South Jordan parks and open space include places to play baseball, soccer, softball, football, tennis, and pickleball. They are also great places to go unwind, breathe fresh air and enjoy the outdoors.

South Jordan City has both active parks–like Highland Park, City Park, or Oquirrh Shadows Park where sporting events are played–and passive parks–these are smaller, neighborhood parks where you can enjoy greenspace and playgrounds close to home. You can also run, jog or walk on our trails, like Bingham Creek Trail, Jordan River Trail, and Oquirrh Mountain Trail.

The City also has specialized parks including the splash pad at Oquirrh Shadows Park and the Samuel Holt Farmstead. The Jordan River corridor boasts 250 acres of preserved natural open space and neighbors Mulligans and the future Mystic Springs Education Area.

As South Jordan grows, additional public parks, like Bingham Creek Regional Park, and open spaces, like the Bingham Creek corridor, will be invested in and developed for the community's benefit and enjoyment.
