Beginning in 2020, in the heart of Salt Lake County, a remarkable transformation was underway. Once an industrial quarry, the former Welby Pit was about to become something extraordinary. Welcome to Bingham Creek Regional Park, where the spirit of community and nature will unite to create a generational oasis.
Nestled at 4800 W. and 10200 S. in South Jordan, Utah, Phase I of this 160-acre park is almost ready to welcome the public. With bated breath, the community is excited at the unveiling of a place they can visit and cherish for years to come.
Phase I brought forth an array of improvements, each carefully designed to enhance the park experience. The entire site underwent extensive mass-grading, transforming the landscape into a harmonious canvas for recreational endeavors.
Crucial infrastructure took shape. Culinary water, secondary irrigation, sewer systems, and internal roads were meticulously installed, creating the backbone of the park's functionality.
As the park unfolded before the eyes of community members, a world of possibilities emerged. Multi-purpose sports fields developed, and a playground seemed to sprout out of the ground, ready to delight laughing children. Woven throughout it all, multi-use trails invite visitors to explore the park's natural beauty.
The vision for Bingham Creek Regional Park extends far beyond its inaugural phase. According to the park's master plan, future phases promise even more marvels. A destination playground and a refreshing splash pad are on the horizon. Tennis courts and pickleball courts will test the skills of sports enthusiasts. Additional multi-purpose sports fields, including a championship-worthy one, will host thrilling competitions. Volleyball courts, basketball courts, and open lawn spaces will invite friendly rivalries and leisurely picnics. A network of trails will connect the park to even more natural wonders.
Once completed, Bingham Creek Regional Park will proudly claim the title of the largest park in Salt Lake County. It will stand as a testament to the power of community, a place where generations can gather, create memories, and find solace in the embrace of nature. The park will be a vibrant recreational hub, a sanctuary where leisure and adventure intertwine.
Funding was crucial to turn this grand vision into reality. Phase I alone required an investment of approximately $18 million. Generous contributions came from the Salt Lake County Zoo, Arts, and Parks program, allocating $13.2 million; Salt Lake County's general fund added $1.5 million, while South Jordan City provided $3 million. Together, they recognized the significance of this park and its potential to enrich the lives of the community.
Ownership and operation of Bingham Creek Regional Park is entrusted to the Bingham Creek Regional Park Authority. Through an inter-local agreement between South Jordan City and Salt Lake County, this partnership will ensure the park's effective governance. The Salt Lake County Council and South Jordan City Council appointed a seven-member board consisting of residents and merit employees. They will diligently establish rules, devise long-term plans, manage the park's budget, and ensure its maintenance and operations.
The responsibility of maintaining the park falls into the capable hands of the Salt Lake County Parks division. Through the inter-local agreement, they will oversee the park's upkeep, ensuring it remains a pristine haven for all who venture within its boundaries.
Even though phase one is complete, the park's story is just beginning. With each passing day, the community will witness the birth and growth of a beautiful regional park where leisure, recreation, and the wonders of nature intertwine, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of all who visit.
