[ARCHIVED] Don't Walk on the Ice

Safety Reminder to Stay off the Ice showing a person that has fallen into a lake through the ice

Ice is starting to form on the waterways in the city. With Oquirrh Lake in Daybreak, the East River Front Park Fishing Ponds, the Jordan River, and other smaller waterways in the city, the potential for residents to fall into a dangerously cold body of water is very real.

The South Jordan Fire Department has responded to several ice rescues in the city and surrounding areas over the last few years. Just last week two boys fell through the ice in Lehi. This is an important reminder that being on the ice is not safe. If you or a pet falls into the water, hypothermia can set in immediately and can cause unconsciousness in as little as 7-15 minutes. Our South Jordan Fire Department has trained professionals and specialized equipment to do rescues in these situations. Once again, do not attempt to rescue them yourself. Dialing 911 as soon as possible will result in the best outcome for everyone.

Also, while ice can seem solid, most of our bodies of water in the City retain a very thin layer of ice throughout the season. This means you should never walk on ice in our City.
