The South Jordan Fire Department is committed to the safety of the community with a goal of reducing home fires and home fire injuries. In light of the restrictions related to COVID-19, many in our community are spending more time cooking at home. As a result of the increased time at home, it’s important to remember that cooking fires are significant contributor to fires in the home. Statistically, unattended cooking is one of the leading causes of kitchen fires and fire injuries. This year’s Fire Prevention Week message is to “Serve up Fire Safety in the Kitchen”.
Some safety items that South Jordan Firefighters and the National Fire Protection Association want the community to remember is to:
- Never leave cooking items unattended.
- Keep items such as oven mitts, towels or any other item that could ignite at least three feet away from cooking surfaces.
- When cooking, always remain alert and maintain a safe distance to prevent injuries.
Burn injuries from fire or boiling liquid are a significant risk to children in the home. Be sure to keep cooking pot handles turned in to prevent small children from grabbing hot items.
Due to the current COVID-19 restrictions, the South Jordan Fire Department will be adjusting our public education outreach during Fire Prevention Week this October 4-10, 2020. More information can be found at sjc.utah.gov/fire.
