Despite the challenges 2020 presented, our City Council, staff, and residents have risen to the occasion and made the most of the last year. We have many successes to celebrate and much to look forward to in 2021.

Our recreation staff did an amazing job keeping residents engaged with creative events like the Virtual Race Series, virtual scavenger hunts, Story Walks, our SoJo Summerfest Reverse Parade – “Float n’ Floats,” and our virtual Light the Night. We’ve worked hard to stay engaged with the community through regular videos, our monthly newsletter, and social media, while we’ve been unable to gather.

While it might be natural to pull back and focus on our own issues during a pandemic, the City engaged in the Utah spirit of helping others by sending our firefighters as a part of Utah Task Force One to help with fires on the west coast and helping other neighboring cities clean up trees from damage during the wind event in September.

The City partnered with Salt Lake County and broke ground on Bingham Creek Regional Park, and we completed phase 2 of Highland Park. We were thrilled to add 12 new pickleball courts between City Park and Highland Park.

Our beautiful cemetery expansion is nearing completion. Many residents have anticipated this expansion for a long time and we are very grateful to have been able to add to this special place.

We are also extremely proud to have won Utah’s Bill Daniels Ethical Leadership Award for government. Ethical Leadership is paramount! It is a great honor to be recognized for our ethical leadership and to be chosen from among all government organizations in the state for this prestigious award.

Looking Forward

Our new fire station, police substation, and City Hall annex – Station 64 – will be completed this year. We have already begun to hire and train staff for the new facility as well as acquire new equipment. Public safety will remain a top priority in 2021 as we continue to work on staffing and equipping the new station. We appreciate all our first responders do to help keep us safe.

I am very excited to announce we are building a beautiful new splash park at Heritage Park. It will be a wonderful addition to our city and a place to enjoy for generations to come. The project will be finished late summer and we look forward to this fun new amenity where our residents can stay cool.

I am also very proud that we were successful in working with UDOT to take Bangerter under 10400 South, and in obtaining grants to pay the additional costs associated so that it will be an underpass just like at 11400 South. This year, from May to November, UDOT will be closing the intersection of 10400 South and Bangerter for the construction of the new intersection. This temporary closure will ensure that our residents remain safe during construction, and also allows the project to be finished in a shorter timeframe. We appreciate your patience and look forward to the completion of this monumental project that will significantly improve traffic flow.

A new elementary school will open on the west side of our City in the fall of 2021 to serve the residents in one of our newest neighborhoods. We also look forward to the completion of an all new, beautiful, and innovative county library. This will be the second library in the City and it is anticipated to open next winter.

Finally, we appreciate the great work and creative solutions that allowed our 2020 high school seniors to celebrate graduation during such uncertain times and pay tribute to our 2021 seniors who are also having a very different senior year experience. I could not be more proud of the amazing resilience I’ve seen by our students and believe they will be well prepared to handle adversity and take on the challenges of college and beyond. A big thank you to our outstanding educators for your heroic efforts and to all the parents and grandparents who have worked to ensure our young people continue learning and progressing during such unique circumstances.

Over the past year we have accomplished much as a City, and we will accomplish even more in 2021. It is truly a privilege to serve as your mayor, and I stand by what I have been saying for the past three years; the future is bright here in South Jordan!
