SoJo Photo Contest @ Online Submissions

While practicing safe social distancing we thought it would be fun to host a SoJo Photo Contest! Show us why you love SoJo in photo form!  We invite all ages and skill levels to participate. The categories are: SoJo Scenery, SoJo Family, and SoJo Pets.  All photos must be taken in SoJo, comply with the SoJo Photo Contest rules, and comply with all CDC COVID-19 recommendations.

All entries must be submitted online by March 27, 2020 by 3:00 pm. 

All entries should contain a brief description of your picture, a signed contest entry agreement, any waivers from those featured in the photo, and a .jpg photo submission (must be 8 MB (3264X2448) in size). You must also own the copyright to any photo submitted.  **Please no more than 3 entries per person**

Categories

All photographs submitted for consideration in the SoJo Photo Contest 2020 must be family-friendly and depict something that generally fits within one of the following categories:

  • SoJo Scenery 
  • SoJo Family
  • SoJo Pets  
Judging
The Judges will analyze each photograph based upon the following:
  • 40% based on relation to the category
  • 30% based on creativity
  • 30% based on originality

Based upon the criteria the Judges will choose one winning photograph from each of the three categories. 

Online public voting will take place between March 30 – April 2, 2020.  We will post the photos on the City of South Jordan Facebook page.  The public is allowed to vote on their favorite by “liking” the picture. The photograph receiving the most votes will be awarded the Public’s Choice award.

Winner/prizes

Winners will be announced on April 3, 2020. There will be one Grand Prize winner, one People’s Choice, and a First Place winner in each category.

Photo Release/Terms and Conditions

The following terms and conditions shall also apply:

  • By submitting a photograph to the SoJo Photo Contest 2020, Applicant understands and agrees that the City may use any photograph submitted, whether timely or not, for the City’s own purposes, including (but not limited to) marketing campaigns, social media sites, websites, and official documents and publications, and may make any edits to said photographs or combine said photographs with other images and media, which the City, in its sole discretion, chooses to make. However, the City will not edit any photograph until after the Judging and voting is complete.
  • Applicant represents and warrants that any photograph submitted to the SoJo Photo Contest by Applicant is the original products of the Applicant, and does not violate any intellectual property rights, or any other rights of any kind enjoyed by any individual or entity, nor do any of Applicant’s submissions feature artwork or intellectual property created or owned by another individual or entity.
  • Applicant must obtain a written waiver of any image rights, intellectual property rights, or any other rights of a person or object depicted in a submitted photograph. In addition to the waiver required Applicant must also obtain a royalty-free, worldwide, perpetual, non-exclusive license from said person (or owner of the object) to publicly display, distribute, reproduce, and create derivative works which include that person or object at no cost to the City. A copy of said waiver and license must accompany this Agreement.
  • Applicant agrees to execute such other documents and to take such other action as may be reasonably necessary to further the purposes of this Agreement.
  • Applicant agrees to indemnify, defend, and hold harmless the City against all claims, damages, lawsuits, losses, liabilities, liens, costs, citations, penalties, fines and expenses, including (but not limited to) attorneys’ fees, arising out of or resulting from the submission of Applicant’s submitted photographs.
  • Time is of the essence with this Agreement, as well as every term, covenant, and condition contained herein.
  • If any provision of this Agreement is determined to be invalid or unenforceable, the remaining provisions of this Agreement shall, nevertheless, be construed, performed, and enforced as if the invalidated or unenforceable provision had not been included I the text of the Agreement.

SoJo Virtual Race Series 2020 @ Various Locations

Stay Connected and join us for our 2020 SoJo Virtual Race Series! As we all are doing our part to keep ourselves and those around us healthy by staying apart, we need to find ways to stay connected. This virtual race series is our way to maintain the connection with our race community and to maintain our mental and physical health. Use the hashtags #sojostayconnected and #sojovirtualraces when posting to social media.

HOW IT WORKS

  1. Register for the virtual race series by clicking the “register now” button below.
  2. When you register, you can choose to pay $15 to get a virtual race series medal and shirt OR you can simply select “No Thank You,” and you’ll still get weekly emails about new routes.
  3. You will be notified of a new route every Monday and some races will offer different distance options, including bike routes!
  4. Share that you’ve registered using the hashtags #sojostayconnected and #sojovirtualraces.
  5. You have ONE WEEK to complete the course. Then after each race, submit your race time (with an app screen capture for proof), pictures and/or a video of you running by the following Sunday at noon. For each item you enter, you get an additional entry to win race swag and prizes! Submit those times, images, and videos in the form below.

SoJo Summerfest Chalk Art Contest and Stroll @ West Riverfront Park

This event is for both artists and residents. Once the art is complete, residents can stroll past the beautiful displays starting on June 3rd.

For artists, Chalk Art Contest supplies can be picked up on Monday, June 1 and June 2 at the South Jordan Community Center, 10778 S. Redwood Rd. South Jordan, Utah 84095.

Contest Rules & Regulations
1. Registration will only be accepted online at register.sjc.utah.gov.

2. $20 registration is due on or before May 15, 2020, 4:00 p.m.
Registration after May 15, 2020 is $20 and a t-shirt is NOT guaranteed.

3. The registration fee provides each team/individual: 1 tote, 1 t-shirt, and 1 box of thin chalk.
-The surface is more bumpy and rough than average sidewalk concrete – we strongly encourage you to bring extra chalk with you if possible.
-Additional chalk may be available upon request, while supplies last, but is not guaranteed. Square Size: Adults – 6ft x 6ft and Youth – 5ft x 5ft

4. Categories:
-Adult (18+), Teen (13-17), and Child (12 & under)
-Teams will be assigned an age category based on the oldest team member. Teams can ONLY consist of two people who live in the same household.

5. South Jordan City Staff reserve the right to disqualify any artwork that is deemed inappropriate.

6. If the artwork is not your own idea, please give credit to the original source.

7. Photos of the artwork will be taken and may be used for advertising and voting purposes.

8. Judging:
-All chalk art will be judged on Wednesday, June 3, regardless of completion.
-Use your time and space wisely. All decisions of the judges are final.
-Chalk art will be judged on Originality, Creativity, and Overall Artistic Impression.

9. Awards: Announced on the City of South Jordan Facebook page on Friday, June 5.

South Jordan Resident: Light Pole Banner Contest @ Online Submissions

The South Jordan Arts Council is requesting South Jordan Residents to submit artwork for a Light Pole Banner Contest. All submissions must be family-friendly and appropriate for all ages. The goal of this project is to display artwork on light poles around the City to add vibrancy to the street. Designs that are bright, colorful, and represent South Jordan in a positive light are encouraged.  **2 artwork submissions per person**

Reminders:

  • Banners will be approximately 20 feet off of the ground
  • Vehicles will be driving past these banners, only allowing for a quick glance at the artwork
  • Simplistic, colorful designs look best

Contest ends on July 6, 2020 at 5:00 pm

The South Jordan Arts Council has sole decision-making authority. Selected artists will be contacted with more information on the banner creation process.

CALL FOR UTAH ARTISTS: Request for Proposals

APPLICATION DEADLINE: Thursday, August 6, 2020

COMMISSION BUDGET: $3,000 – for each crosswalk mural.

PROJECT BACKGROUND

The City of South Jordan and the South Jordan Arts Council are requesting proposals for the commissioning of two professional murals on the center crosswalks located at 1665 Towne Center Drive. As part of the South Jordan Art Council’s Vibrancy Project, the purpose of this project is to create a sense of community and add vibrancy to the Towne Center plaza. The plaza includes seating areas, picnic tables, restaurants, and local businesses.

The organizations mentioned above are pleased to provide an opportunity for any Utah artist or Utah artist lead team to respond to this RFP with a mural proposal. **Proposals can be for one or both crosswalks**

ARTWORK GOALS

The South Jordan Arts Council seeks a site-specific mural that:

  • Is visually engaging for passersby and those who use and visit the plaza.
  • Is simplistic yet interesting – The designs should be simple enough to easily maintain them by a non-artist if desired.

PROJECT BUDGET & ELIGIBILITY

The total budget for this project is $6,000 ($3,000 per crosswalks, artists can create a proposal for one or both crosswalks). The budget is inclusive of artist’s fees and related expenses for design, include all costs associated with the creation and completion of the mural/artwork, including artists’ travel, prep work, materials, supplies, surface preparation, installation, and an anti-graffiti protective coating. Any fees incurred for design/artwork related engineering or assistance from any contractors shall be the responsibility of the artist.

DESIGN REQUIREMENTS

  • Artwork shall not contain any standards, traffic signals, or sign icons.
  • Artwork shall not contain logos, text, advertising, or promote a specific business, political party, or religion.
  • No directional markings.
  • Artwork must be contained within the white “stop arm” lines that are already painted on the crosswalk.
  • Colors will be limited to five (5) per crosswalk.
  • Unless otherwise requested and pre-approved, paint for the artwork must be one of the following brands/types:
    • Watco Anti-Slip Traffic Paint
    • Transpo Color-Safe Durable Pavement Marking Material (paint) – H&C
    • COLORTOP Water-Based Solid Color Concrete Stain available at Sherwin Williams
  • Colors: Colors utilized must be reproducible and the color name and number shall be submitted with this application.

PROJECT SCHEDULE

Notification of Artist Selection – Monday, August 17, 2020

Contract Preparation – Wednesday, August 19, 2020

Day 1 of Artwork Installation– Saturday, September 5, 2020**

Day 2 of Artwork Installation– Saturday, September 12, 2020**

**Installation will coincide with the South Jordan Farmers Market. Artists will only have two days (Saturday, September 5 and Saturday, September 12) to complete the murals.**

Dates are subject to change, except for the application deadline of Thursday, August 6, 2020.

SELECTION CRITERIA & PROCESS

The City of South Jordan and The South Jordan Arts Council will review all of the properly submitted applications and will recommend the artist/teams for the commission.

In selecting the artist/team for this project, the following criteria will be considered:

  • Final artwork that is one-of-a-kind, site-specific, and meets the project goals;
  • Artistic excellence, innovation, and originality as evidence by visual documentation and supporting materials;
  • The artist’s final work meets all operational, maintenance, American’s with Disabilities Act (ADA), and public safety requirements;
  • Ability to meet deadlines and budget and to perform work in a timely, professional manner;
  • The artist’s professional experience is adequate to meet the demands of the project including the ability to work with stakeholders, project managers, and community members.

The artist or artist lead team selected for the project will sign an agreement with the City of South Jordan.

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS

Submissions that arrive on or before 11:59 pm on Thursday, August 6, 2020 and meet all of the application requirements will be reviewed. To be considered for this project, applicants must submit all of the required materials via this website. There is no application fee to apply or to use the online application system. No other method of submission will be accepted. Late or incomplete applications will not be considered. The applicant’s name must appear on all submitted materials.

Art Proposal

  • (first name _ last name.proposal.pdf) Artists must submit a color, scale visual rendering, and a written description including project intent, dimensions, materials and a preliminary budget. (2 pages maximum)
    Accepted file types: jpg, jpeg, gif, png, pdf, tiff, tif, doc, docx, odf.
  • (first name _ last name.title1.jpg, first name _ last name.title2.jpg, etc.) Three to five (3-5) jpeg images of unique examples of past work. If applicable, please provide examples of completed past work of similar, scope, scale, and budget. Each image must not exceed 1MB in size. Five images per application, not per team member. Each image must include the title, date of completion/installation, media, dimensions (height x width x depth, in feet), location, final project cost and a brief description of the work.

SoJo Plein Air Contest- Quick Draw @ Virtual Event

SoJo Plein Air Contest – Quick Draw from afar! Since our 2020 Plein Air event was canceled in May due to COVID-19 restrictions, we are bringing the event to YOU from afar! This fun, fast-paced, Plein Air painting contest is open to all ages & abilities and is free to participate.

Submission Deadline: All art to be submitted via email to sojoarts@sjc.utah.gov by 5:00 pm on August 7, 2020.

Categories: Professional 18 years older, Amateur 18 years and older, or Youth 17 years old and younger.

Guidelines:

1. Artists have 3 hours to produce their art in one sitting.

2. Art must be produced in real life, either on location outdoors or indoors using still life. The art must be original work of the artist including the composition. *Please practice all social distancing recommendations.*

3. Any Medium may be used to produce the art, except for photography, computer-generated/assisted art, marker, or crayon.

4. Artists will photograph and submit the beginning blank canvas, ½ way at 1.5-hour progress, and then the final piece at 3 hours. All entries, with the attached three photos, should be emailed to sojoarts@sjc.utah.gov before the deadline.

5. When submitting, please enter one of the three categories: Professional 18 years and older, Amateur 18 years and older, or Youth 17 years old and younger. Please include name, category, age, city, title of work, mediums used, address, and phone number.

A final gallery of all submitted pieces will be posted on the City of South Jordan Facebook page and on this event page. Judging will be by a panel of experts and the top 3 winners in each category will receive a prize.

By entering this show artists allow the City of South Jordan and/or the South Jordan Arts Council to use their art images in advertising other art events without receiving compensation.
