SoJo Plein Air Contest- Quick Draw @ Virtual Event

SoJo Plein Air Contest – Quick Draw from afar! Since our 2020 Plein Air event was canceled in May due to COVID-19 restrictions, we are bringing the event to YOU from afar! This fun, fast-paced, Plein Air painting contest is open to all ages & abilities and is free to participate.

Submission Deadline: All art to be submitted via email to sojoarts@sjc.utah.gov by 5:00 pm on August 7, 2020.

Categories: Professional 18 years older, Amateur 18 years and older, or Youth 17 years old and younger.

Guidelines:

1. Artists have 3 hours to produce their art in one sitting.

2. Art must be produced in real life, either on location outdoors or indoors using still life. The art must be original work of the artist including the composition. *Please practice all social distancing recommendations.*

3. Any Medium may be used to produce the art, except for photography, computer-generated/assisted art, marker, or crayon.

4. Artists will photograph and submit the beginning blank canvas, ½ way at 1.5-hour progress, and then the final piece at 3 hours. All entries, with the attached three photos, should be emailed to sojoarts@sjc.utah.gov before the deadline.

5. When submitting, please enter one of the three categories: Professional 18 years and older, Amateur 18 years and older, or Youth 17 years old and younger. Please include name, category, age, city, title of work, mediums used, address, and phone number.

A final gallery of all submitted pieces will be posted on the City of South Jordan Facebook page and on this event page. Judging will be by a panel of experts and the top 3 winners in each category will receive a prize.

By entering this show artists allow the City of South Jordan and/or the South Jordan Arts Council to use their art images in advertising other art events without receiving compensation.

2020 Get to the River Festival

About the Festival: The Get to the River Festival is a month-long series of community events centered on the Jordan River and Jordan River Parkway. During 30 days in September, cities and counties along the river will host events near their section that help celebrate, protect, and restore the Jordan River.

The Jordan River corridor runs through three counties and sixteen cities flowing from Utah Lake, through the Salt Lake Valley, and finally into the Great Salt Lake. The 50-mile river has tremendous value – environmentally, recreationally, economically, and culturally – for both the communities through which it flows and for the entire Wasatch Front.

Around 15,000 people utilize the Jordan River Parkway each month. This paved, non-motorized trails that follows the river and weaves in and out of urban areas, parks, and lush riverside areas is the perfect place for walking, running, cycling, skating, or simply escaping from the city. The river and trail provides a unique offering in our urban landscape and adds to our community’s beauty and wellness.

2020 South Jordan Resident Art Show @ South Jordan Community Center

Art is for everyone! Join us October 5 – October 16 for the 13th Annual South Jordan Art Show. At a new location this year, the South Jordan Community Center (10778 S. Redwood Rd), will house incredible artwork from talented artists from our very own South Jordan community. Both adult and youth residents are welcome to submit pieces. The show is free and open to the public, hours of operation are listed below. Thank you in advance for your support of the arts!

Art Show Hours of Operation:

Sensitive Groups/High-Risk Individuals Only 

Monday – Friday 8:00 am to 9:00 am

General Public

Monday – Thursday 9:30 am to 5:00 pm

Friday – 9:30 am to 3:30 pm

If you are interested in displaying your artwork in the show or have any questions, please contact Haley Greene at sojoarts@sjc.utah.gov.

  • Artists must be South Jordan residents.
  • Each artist can submit up to 2 pieces of original artwork, those pieces should be no older than three years old and not shown previously in the South Jordan Art Show.
  • The Categories include: Traditional Mediums (Drawing, Watercolor, Oil, and Digital), Photography, 3D (Sculpture, Ceramic, and Pottery). **3D category for Adults and Professionals only**
  • Any hanging art must be securely wired to hang.
  • The participant’s name, address, phone number, and email must be provided on the back of all photo entries.
  • All artists must sign an Artwork Loan Agreement before their artwork will be accepted. **To limit face to face interaction at drop off, please fill out the Artwork Loan Agreement online**
  • Artwork will be displayed at the Community Center throughout the entire duration of the show.

Pieces can be dropped off at the Community Center (10778 S. Redwood Rd, South Jordan, UT) October 1 from 12 pm-5:30 pm and October 2 from 9 am to 12 pm.

Age Groups: Child (6 years – 9 years), Youth (10 years – 13 years), Teen (14 years – 17 years), Adult (18+), Professional (Artists that have ever been paid for their work), Seniors (55+)

Holiday Lights Tour 2020

Registration begins on Monday, November 23rd and will remain open until December 21st. Register early for a better chance to win the People’s Choice Award!

Rules and Guidelines:

  • Do not cover/interfere with any fire safety equipment or walkways
  • Keep everything family-friendly
  • Homes must be located in a participating city
  • Winners will be announced on social media and all winners will receive an email
  • Judging will only include the portion of your house/yard that is visible from the driveway or street
  • Decorated houses should remain decorated through December 26th

Write Around SoJo – Writing Contest @ Online Contest

Rules and Guidelines

  • $10 resident/$20 non-resident registration fee is due by Thursday, July 8, 2021 at 12:00 pm. Register at register.sjc.utah.gov.
  • 5,000 words or less
  • Categories include: works of poetry, short stories, first chapters, and personal essays
  • Each category will be divided into two groups: youth (12-17) and adults (18+)
  • Only one entry per author will be accepted
  • To keep the submission anonymous, the entrant’s name can only appear on the title page and the title must be on each page.
  • Submissions should
    • Be in .doc, .docx, or .rtf format
    • Use a 12-point standard font (Times New Roman or Courier)
    • Be double spaced with one-inch margins
    • Unpublished works only
  • Works may NOT include:
    • Discriminatory Content (ableism, racism, sexism, homophobia, or transphobia, etc.)
    • Copyrighted Materials
    • Overly Controversial Content

Judging Criteria

  • Submissions will be scored on a scale of 1 to 10 in the following categories:

Make a new friend this summer! Learn an easy weaving technique and make a tiny turtle friend to hang out with. Craft packets will be available throughout June at the Gale Center while supplies last. The instructor will provide – Hand Sanitizer, Cleaning Supplies, Water Bowls, Paper Towels, Paint Brushes, and Instruction. TUITION REDUCED to $40.00 to compensate for students bringing their own supplies.

COVID-19 guidelines will be followed. If your child is sick, please keep them home. Follow proper hygiene guidelines – soap or hand sanitizer will be provided in the classroom. Parents must stay in the car and students will be spaced 6ft from other students.

2021 SoJo Summerfest Battle of the Bands

Application and Terms and Conditions of Participation

SoJo Summerfest Battle of the Bands Video Submission

DUE July 5, 2021

Thank you for your interest in the SoJo Summerfest Battle of the Bands. By entering this competition, each member of your band must agree to the following terms and conditions:

  • This is an all-ages, family-oriented community event. Music lyrics must be clean. The performance must be free of all violence, vulgarity, lewdness, sexual content, and adult language. Failure to comply with these standards will result in disqualification from the competition.
  • This competition will take place in three rounds as described below. If a band advances to the final round, they will be competing with a 25-minute live set at South Jordan City’s SoJo Summerfest on September 17, 2021.
  • Bands chosen to advance will be chosen by a panel of judges.
  • Individuals may only enter in one band and the individuals in each band should remain constant.
  • Bands must submit all songs in the form of a YouTube link. A “music video” is not required, the video can just be a cell phone video of the band playing the song.

Round 1:

  • Each group will be allotted a total of four (4) minutes to perform one song they feel best represents their Any band going over their time limit may be disqualified or have points deducted.
  • Entries will be judged by an internal committee, the bands progressing to Round 2 will be notified on July 19, 2021.

Round 2:

  • Each advancing group will be allotted a total of 10 minutes to perform up to two additional songs, one cover song and one original song OR two original songs on or before August 2, 2021. Any band going over their time limit or fail to have additional videos submitted on time may be disqualified or have points
  • Entries from both rounds will be judged by our professional judges. The bands progressing to the Final Round will be announced on August 16, 2021.

Final Round:

  • If a band advances to the final round, they will be competing with a 25-minute live set at South Jordan City’s SoJo Summerfest on September 17, 2021.
  • Winners from each category will perform a final 45-minute set on Saturday, September 18, 2021.
